Open Mic Poetry is back in business on the last Wednesday of most months, featuring a guest poet followed by our open mic when we welcome poets, both published and aspiring, experienced or newcomers, to share their poems. 

For January 2023 we welcome Janine Booth, renowned performance poet. She is the author of several poetry collections. She comes highly recommended by some of the top names in poetry in Britain, including Joelle Taylor, Henry Normal and Attila the Stockbroker. Se'll be reading from her books plus new poems.

Do come along and join us for a great evening of live poetry. Sign up on the door to read. Entrance £5 payable on the door. We'll continue taking responsible covid precautions so please bring a face mask in case we feel it is needed.

Explore the visions in paintings and words of William Blake, Joseph Turner and Percy Bysshe Shelley as Blakefest is held this year in the magnificent surroundings of Petworth House. Enjoy a glass of prosecco at a reception in the Battery House with South Downs poets and musicians before a presentation on the radical visions of Blake, Shelley and Turner by Dr Alexandra Loske, Curator of the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, and Jeremy Page, poet and editor of Frogmore Press. We will then proceed to the North Gallery where a number of Blake’s paintings, including his depictions of Milton’s Paradise Lost and Spencer’s Fairy Queen, can be viewed as well as the fine collection of Turner paintings, on loan from the Tate, in the adjacent rooms.

Be inspired and entertained as Alexandra Loske and Jeremy Page are joined by South Downs poets and actors including Emily Rose Smith, James Simpson and Mandy Pannett with promenade readings plus musical interludes on guitar played by Zoe Barnett, the Sussex Young Musician of the Year.

OPEN MIC POETRY WITH JOAN SECOMBE

A special evening celebrating creativity is planned by Chichester Poetry when co-founder and organiser Joan Secombe will be heading the bill at Open Mic Poetry at the New Park Centre on Wednesday 26th February.

Spokesman Barry Smith said, ‘We’re delighted that after working behind the scenes for many years, Joan will be taking centre stage as guest poet to read from her first collection of poetry, Moving from the West, which uses family history, the landscape of South Wales and travel for inspiration

Joan was born and raised in South Wales before studying English at University College, London, going on to train as a teacher after some experience in industry. Her whole teaching career was spent at Chichester’s Bishop Luffa School, where she combined the role of housemistress with teaching English.

SOUTH DOWNS POETRY FESTIVAL: POETRY AND MUSIC

 A celebration of poetry and music in the atmospheric setting of the Cathedral. Join distinguished poet Robyn Bolam, with South Downs poets Stephanie Norgate and Barry Smith for a stimulating reading of new poetry alongside classic Sussex poems read by professional actors. Live music by Linda Kelsall-Barnett on classical guitar.

Robyn Bolam was awarded an Eric Gregory Award and won the Cheltenham Prize. She held an Hawthornden International Fellowship. Her first book of poetry The Peepshow Girl was followed by several others including Raiding the Borders and New Wings: poems 1977-2007. Her latest collection is Hyem (Bloodaxe).

Gareth Williams has worked extensively in film, TV and theatre. He was formerly a singer with the million-selling pop group, The Flying Pickets. His latest film is Peterloo, directed by Mike Leigh. He is currently touring the UK in an Agatha Christie mystery.

Stephanie Norgate is a Bloodaxe poet. Her most recent collection is the Blue Den. She is also a dramatist. She is tutor on the Creative Writing M.A. at the university of Chichester.

DON PATERSON HEADLINES AT POETRY & JAZZ CAFE

Acclaimed poet Don Paterson will make a welcome return visit to the Festival of Chichester to headline at the Poetry & Jazz Cafe at Edes House, West Street, Chichester on Thursday, 30th June, 2016. Starts 7.30pm.

Don will read from his brilliant new collection Forty Sonnets as well as revisiting some old favourites. The evening will also feature exciting live jazz, Sussex poets with new work and a cafe/bar serving complimentary homemade cake. Advance booking recommended.
